Kindergartens and primary schools are to break early for the Lunar New Year due to flu outbreaks across the city.

Two children have died since the start of 2018, though the epidemic has not yet reached its peak and the government must take measures to prevent more children from falling ill, he said.

More than 330 outbreaks reported since last month.

There were 14,401 new laboratory-confirmed cases during the week ending January 13, bringing the season total to 74,562. These numbers do not include all people who have had the flu, as many do not see a doctor when sick.

There were 10 additional flu-related deaths among children during the week ending January 13, bringing the total for the season to 30 deaths.

"This is one of those flu seasons they're gonna be comparing other flu seasons to," said Dr. Brahim Ardolic, chairman of emergency medicine at Staten Island University Hospital in New York City.

Dr. Dan Jernigan, director of the CDC's Influenza Division, said last week the season is looking worse than the 2012-2013 season, but not as bad as the 2014-2015 season, although that could change before the season ends. The H3N2 virus strain was dominant in those seasons, as well.

The flu season is typically worst around February, but can reach its height anytime from October to April. Though influenza had only only killed three Californians at this time last year, it had taken 68 lives by the end of February, according to state data.

Many California doctors, however, contend that the recent surge has been unusually severe.

“Rates of influenza are even exceeding last year, and last year was one of the worst flu seasons in the last decade,” said Dr. Randy Bergen, clinical lead of the flu vaccine program for Kaiser Permanente in Northern California.

Most people in California and nationwide are catching a strain of influenza known as H3N2, which the flu vaccine typically doesn’t work as well against.

National health officials say the vaccine might only be about 32% effective this year, which could be contributing to the high number of people falling ill.

The girl, surnamed Lau, aged about 10, is reported to have suffered from acute septicemia and pneumonia after catching the flu.

Infectious disease specialist Joseph Tsang Kay-yan said it is very common for the flu virus to trigger secondary bacterial infections, such as pneumonia.

According to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention: "Flu virus infection of the respiratory tract can trigger an extreme inflammatory response in the body and can lead to sepsis, the body's life-threatening response to infection."
